THE RAVEN Lou Reed (Photographs
by Julian Schnabel)
Grove Press, ISBN 0802117562, 240 pages, hardback, New York, USA, September
2003
The Raven book published by Grove Press
(and what a history resides there) is the full text of the cd version
of the original play POEtry which was performed in the Thalia theater
in Hamburg directed by Robert Wilson.
An iconoclastic genius offers a
haunting exploration of the work of Edgar Allan Poe.
One of the most influential and
innovative recording artists of the past three decades, Lou Reed has
always offered a shrewd view of life in the big city in all its colors
and explored life's extremes of darkness and light. It is no surprise,
then, that he considers Edgar Allan Poe a spiritual forefather. In
The Raven, Reed immerses himself in Poe’s enigmatic world and
sets out to reimagine his work to mesmerizing effect. In 2001 Lou Reed,
legendary theater director Robert Wilson, and an all-star cast presented
the musical POEtry at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Reed’s subsequent
studio adaptation, The Raven, has been hailed as one of his more daring
and challenging albums. Here, accompanied by photographs by the acclaimed
artist and director Julian Schnabel, is the definitive text of the
CD release. The Raven includes Reed’s distinctive takes on Poe’s
most celebrated works, as well as song lyrics written for the musical.
The Raven is a fascinating meeting between a dark chronicler of the
twentieth century and his nineteenth-century counterpart.
EMOTIONS IN ACTION Lou Reed
Steidl Publishing; Boxed edition, ISBN 3882439238 , 112 pages (39 color 47
b&w) , hardback, New York, USA, October 2003
"Like everything
else I do my photos are about emotion. I'm interested in causing
and recording emotion through action and interactive sequence,
the sequence meant to tell a story of sorts, a dream. I am a lyricist
and my feeling for rhythm and song dictates that these photos not
be titled or in any other way impinged by the written word. The
visuals speak for themselves in their relationships and theme and
I have no interest in the where and when of it all. These dreams
exist through the viewfinder of the camera and express a reality
seen only through a lens but experienced by us all in every moment
of puzzlement in waking life" Lou Reed
Emotion in Action is a book of photographs
done in collaboration with the German printer Gerhard Steidl. His credits
are too numerous to mention. However Lou spent a week working with
him in his studio complex in which all is in house except for the paper
which is ordered.
The pictures are printed from the most advanced techniques
available using the finest machinery. Lou wishes he had taken pictures
of the process and the amazing printers but he was busy working.
The books come together in a format Lou calls the piggyback book . This is
a Lou invention in which one book sits within the other. The idea is that you
may take the smaller book with you and leave the bigger one on your gold veranda.
Lou is enornously proud of this book and his work with Mr. Steidl and hopes
to have an opportunity to do a second book.
Lou is collecting every lens available for his new Olympus
E1- the first digital camera built to be digital from the ground up.
He has waited two years for this having been a major fan of the E10.
Only this could satisfy the fan of the Carl Zeiss lens and Contax film
cameras. Most of the photos in Emotions in Action were taken using
Contax or Leica cameras.

After his first book of photographs was published, Lou Reed told a journalist for The Independent on Sunday that "I live on intuition and taking pictures is intuitive." Here, we see Lou Reed's intuitive take on New York, the city that has been the fulcrum of his creative world for decades and with which he has become indelibly identified. We've heard about the streets and characters for so long through his words and music, and now we can see it through his eyes. Over 100 of Reed's photographs comprise New York, an intimate view of what inspires him.

Berlin Lou Reed & Julian Schnabel
Rizzoli International Publications; ISBN 978-0847832125 , 160 pages , hardback, USA, April,
20 2009
Berlin is a concept album that represented a brave departure from the familiar sounds and themes of Lou Reed's earlier solo work, a tragic tale about heartbreak and addiction meant to be played live as a rock opera, in the vein of The Who's Tommy. But its poor reception meant that plans for a live performance were put on hold until 2007, when, with a renewed confidence in the material, Reed toured with a full orchestra and choir, giving some of the most personal and powerful performances of his career. The tour was filmed by legendary artist Julian Schnabel, a longtime friend of Reed's who also designed the spare and beautiful set, and whose daughter Lola contributed moving images projected behind the stage. This immeasurably powerful book draws on stills from Schnabel's film, photographs of the set design, printed lyrics of Reed's original verse, and images from Schnabel's projections to tell the twin stories of Berlin as rock opera and as unique collaboration between two geniuses of contemporary art, music, words, and film. The book also includes a rare conversation between Reed and Schnabel.

The Velvet Underground: New York Art Johan Kugelberg (foreword by Lou Reed)
Rizzoli International Publications, ISBN: 978-0847830848,
hardback, 304 pages, New York, USA, October 9, 2009
"The Velvet Underground: New York Art" is an astonishing assembly of rare objects and artworks and the first book of its scale to document the formative years of the band Time Out magazine named the greatest New York musicians of all time. From never-before-seen photographs of the band's first live show in New York to Andy Warhol's cover and poster designs, Lou Reed's handwritten music and lyrics, underground press clippings and controversial reviews, flyers, handbills, and posters, the materials here comprise a uniquely comprehensive survey of the first rock group ever to transcend the genre and embrace underground popular culture. Including a conversation recorded especially for the book between founding members Lou Reed and Maureen Tucker, this beautifully illustrated book is the first to present a definitive picture of the band's genesis and development in the extraordinary New York scene of the mid- to late-1960s.
Romanticism Lou Reed Steidl, ISBN: 978-3865217288,
hardback, 68 pages, USA, October 12, 2009
In Romanticism, Lou Reed's third photo collection, the subjects are various landscape and architectural motifs encountered and documented in travels through Scotland, Denmark, Spain, Rome, China and Big Sur in California. The approach is at once formal and steeped in feeling. As Reed states, recalling the contexts for these images, "The trees and the wind billowing and dancing in Edinburgh reminding me of the storm I fell in love with in Cork. The perspectives and range of blacks and whites the perfect thing for a film noir fan."
The Raven Lou Reed (text) & Lorenzo Marotti (illustrations) Fantagraphics Books, ISBN: 978-1606994443,
hardback, 188 pages, USA, August 3, 2011
A collision of two masters becomes a threesome: Lou Reed, Edgar Allan Poe, and Lorenzo Mattotti.
In 2001 legendary rock and roller Lou Reed immersed himself in the world of one of his spiritual forefathers, Edgar Allan Poe, to produce one of his most challenging and original works: POEtry, a cycle of songs directed by the legendary theater director Robert Wilson, in which Reed's poetically streetwise sensibility merged with Poe's dark chronicles of terror and despair — combining Poe's prose and work set to music, Reed songs inspired by Poe, and even two classic Reed tunes whose insertion into this context gave them a new resonance.
This suite of songs was released on 2003 on CD as The Raven.
This spectacular volume adds a third dark, unique vision to the mix: The brilliant Italian cartoonist and illustrator Lorenzo Mattotti (RAW Magazine, The New Yorker), whose vivid, abstracted and enigmatic paintings perfectly complement Reed and Poe's haunting words. Full-color illustrations throughout.

TEXTOS Y COMIZ, ISBN: 84-400-9750-6, 64 pages, Barcelona/Spain, 1976
This is a mixture of book, fanzine and comics magazine. Contains biography,
interview (by Danny Fields), discography and lots of comics stripes inspired
by Lou Reed and The VU. The cover and the inside comics were used by Lou
for his solo LP Take no Prisoners. The original cover is from Nazario,
a famous comics illustrator in those times. Lou told someone else (not
need to mention it) to draw it for his LP cover without asking permission
to the author, saying that Nazario and the other illustrators in the book
never ask any permission to him to use his image. There was a sue from
the editors and Nazario against Lou Reed for the copyright of the illustration,
and the cover for this LP here in Spain was changed to another one with
a photograph of Lou on stage in his blonde-hair times.

FEED-BACK
The Velvet Underground: legend, truth
Ignacio Juliá Munster Records, ISBN 978-84-612-6825-2, Spain, 2008
"The Velvet Undergound didn't end with Reed leaving in 1970, or with the ultimely deaths of Warhol and Nico in the late Eighties, but with Sterling Morrison's passing in 1995. He lives againg as the central voice in these chronicles of a tras-atlantic musical journey that transformed the very foundations of Rock as much as Dylan or The Beatles. From their avantgarde beginnings to pop music's deepest mythology, Feed-Back documentsthe rock icon while grasping for the flesh and truth inside the legend, in a series of exclusive conversations with all its members, and critical appreciations, that run from early Sixties to the present, including Reed and Cale's solo careers until today. Rare photographs and memorabilia illustrate this personal diary that engage fans and newcomers alike"
